Merchants Commercial Bank Mourns the Passing of Founder and Esteemed Board Member Alda Monsanto
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – January 7, 2025 – The Board of Directors, Management, and Staff of Merchants Commercial Bank wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mrs. Alda Monsanto, a founding member of our bank and a cherished member of our Board of Directors. Mrs. Monsanto was not only a visionary leader but also a tireless advocate for the U.S. Virgin Islands community, leaving a legacy of service, dedication, and excellence.
As a founding member of Merchants Commercial Bank, Mrs. Monsanto played an instrumental role in shaping our institution’s mission of community-focused banking. Her leadership and commitment to innovation helped Merchants Commercial Bank grow into the trusted financial institution it is today.
Beyond her work at MCB, Mrs. Monsanto demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the enrichment of the Virgin Islands community. She was a key force in restoring the statues at Education Park in downtown Charlotte Amalie, preserving an essential piece of local heritage. As a Board Member Emeritus of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, she worked tirelessly to support initiatives that uplift and empower both the territory and the community at large.
Her professional career was marked by a dedication to service and community advancement. From 1971 to 1980, she served as Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Housing Authority, where she worked to improve housing opportunities for countless residents. Additionally, she served as the Chief Labor Negotiator for the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States from 1983 to 1991, navigating complex negotiations with integrity and care.
In her earlier roles, she served as Training Coordinator for Career Exploration Programs for the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce from 1981 to 1983, helping young people build skills and explore opportunities.
